Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland, located on reclaimed land in Penny’s Bay just off Lantau Island, is the fifth and most recent Disneyland in the world. 1.8 billion dollars went into the creation of Hong Kong Disneyland. The results include a theme park, two hotels and many, many retail, dining and entertainment facilities, not to mention a dedicated rail network linking it to Yam O. The park opened for business in September 2005.

The park is unique because it incorporates the traditional magic kingdom style with Chinese culture, customs and traditions. The entire park was constructed according to the principals of Feng Shui, and the Haunted Mansion, a popular feature elsewhere, was left out entirely because of Chinese beliefs about the afterlife.

The park can accommodate 34,000 visitors a day and has four themed "lands": Main Street USA, Adventureland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Adventureland is the largest section, larger even than the Adventurelands in the four other Disneyland theme parks, despite the fact that Hong Kong Disneyland is actually the smallest of the five parks.

In 2007 two new attractions, including a water park, will open at Hong Kong Disneyland, bringing the park’s total entertainment items to 24 (compared with 44 in Paris, 45 in Tokyo and Florida and 65 in California). The classic "It’s a Small World" attraction is scheduled to open in 2008. Plans to open an animation academy on Main Street USA, where guests will be taught to draw in the classic Disney style, are also in the works.

A number of special events take place in the park. ‘Disney on Parade’, a daily cavalcade of Disney characters dancing about to music in a magical procession, starts in Fantasyland and goes down Main Street USA. ‘Disney in the Stars’ is a splendid fireworks display choreographed to classic Disney songs and put on every evening. Disney’s Rainy Day Express replaces Disney on Parade on rainy days; the characters dance an perform on a train instead of through the streets. A number of other celebrations are held throughout the year, including Disney’s Halloween, A Magical Christmas and Disney’s Chinese New Year.
