The Huangshan, literally ‘Yellow Mountains’, are nestled in Anhui province. These mountains hold a special significance, for it’s said that Emperor Called Xuanyuan drank an elixir of immortality and became a celestial being in their midst. Because of this and because of their incredible beauty, the Yellow Mountains are a frequent subject of Chinese literature and paintings as well as a tourist attraction.
The Yellow Mountains consist of 77 peaks more than 1000 meters above sea level. The three tallest peaks in the range are the Lotus Peak at 1864 meters, the Bright Summit Peak at 1860 meters and the Celestial Peak at 1829 meters. In total, the range covers an area of 250 kilometers.
Aside from its general beauty, which would certainly be enough to recommend it, Huangshan includes 140 UNESCO World Heritage recognized scenic attractions. It is well known for its magnificent landscape, which is said to have the ‘four wonders’ - imposing granite peaks, unusually shaped pine trees, fantastic rocks, and a sea of clouds. There are also a number of natural pools and hot springs.
The oddly shaped pines are symbols of reliability, steadfastness, and welcome. Two in particular are must-sees, the 1500 year old ‘Welcoming Guests Pine’ and it’s sibling the ‘See Guests Off Pine’.
The hot springs in the Huangshan Mountains, with an average temperature of 45 degrees year-round, are located at the foot of Purple Cloud Peak. Many of the most beautiful natural pools are found in the Songgu area.
Since many of the peaks are often obscured by clouds - over 200 days a year are heavily misty in Huashang - there are a number of interesting light phenomena to see. The Sea of Clouds and the Buddha’s Light are two of the most famous.
One Line Sky is one of the most popular attractions in the range. It is a long and narrow passage between two peaks, so narrow that people must walk through it single file. If you look up at the sky while walking through, all you can see of it is a thin blue line.
Huangshan is touted as the best place in China to see a magnificent sunrise.
