The 28,000 Nu live mostly in Yunnan Province.
According to historical records, the Nu people are the descendants of the Luluman people, who inhabited the area during the Yuan Dynasty and were the ancient residents of Gongshan. The name “Nu” comes from the name of the river they live near, the Nu River.
Their spoken language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The language does not have a written form.
Most Nu are polytheists, though a number are Tibetan Buddhists.
Agriculture is their main occupation. The chief farm products include corns, highland barley, potatoes, and beans.
