ShenzenOne of the busiest ports in China and one of the fastest growing cities in the world, Shenzen Municipality has an official population of 13 million, 6 in the city itself. It borders Hong Kong to the north, and was established as a Special Economic Zone in 1979 because of that very proximity.
Though it’s located in the heart of Cantonese speaking Guangdong, Mandarin is predominantly spoken in Shenzen because huge numbers of people have migrated from the interior to Shenzen in search of work.
Since Shenzen is one of China’s newest cities, its list of historical monuments is short. Instead, Shenzen is known as a shopping haven, where prices are much cheaper than in neighboring Hong Kong but quality and fashion no less evident.
