When my Chinese colleague mentioned how happy she was with the results in the World Cup so far, I was glad to have found another rugby fan in the office. I was a little confused when she said that my country did a great job against Argentina (didn’t hear anything about that game), and even more surprised when she said she hoped that China would make the semi final...
You guessed it folks, she wasn’t talking about the Rugby World Cup at all. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2007 has come to China. It is being held in five cities (Chengdu, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Tianjin and Shanghai). Typhoon Wipha has caused two matches scheduled to take place in Shanghai to be moved to Hangzhou. So far, China has won 3-2 against Denmark (the People’s Daily website describes the Danish team as their ‘arch-rivals’) , but lost 4-0 to Brazil. To make the semi final, then they must win their next match against New Zealand, and Brazil will have to win their match against Denmark too. FIFA President has praised China’s efforts in organizing the World Cup. He also commented: “I think China's women squad is better prepared than the men's team, who earned bad results in the Asian Cup”.
So sports fans should keep their eyes open to see how the Cup goes. China’s organization of the games could be a glimpse of things to come in the 2008 Olympic Games..
