I think when the Chinese, Korean or Japnese are whitening themselves, they are not particularly thinking about keeping an image or status. They are doing so because Asians, in general, looks better with a lighter and fair complexion. Unlike Westerner, who can afford to look fabulous in a tan with their beautiful distinct features, Asians with a tan on their "flatter" features, might appear to look like American Indians, or indigenous people.
There are also many Asians that strives for and look great with a tan, because they can.
I believe, overall, Asians prefer to look pale, because they look better and cleaner being pale.
It has little to do with status or wanting to look like Westerners.
It is a simple fact that the differences in facial features make many Asians less attractive in a tan.
People strive to look their best regardless of race, gender and age.
Asian girls don't want to look like Pocahontas, so they choose not to.
