Mount Taishan

Tai Mountain (Taishan) lie in the center of Shadong province. The range is more than a little impressive in size; it’s tallest peak, Jade Emperor Peak located in the city of Tai’an, is 5029 feet high and it’s base covers 426 kilometers. In 200 years of dynastic history 72 emperors ascended Taishan to pray to the gods after ascending to their thrones. It’s because of this important part the mountain played in China’s history, and because of its many ancient Taoist and Buddhist temples and landmarks, that it’s considered sacred. Famous poets and monks have also climbed Taishan from time to time. Today, it also enjoys the honor of being a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage Sight.

Taishan is said to be the foremost of the five sacred mountains of Taoism. There are 22 Taoist temples and many tablets bearing inscriptions and information about China’s rich history to be found on its slopes. Of the temples, Dai Temple, dedicated to the god of Taishan, is the largest. It was first built during the Qin dynasty at the foot of Taishan, covering an area of 96,000 square meters. The emperors would begin their journey to the top from this temple, and so their route – known as the eastern route – to the top is marked by a number of beautiful gateways, pavilions and temples. The Azure Cloud Temple, dedicated to the god of Taishan’s daughter, and the Divine Rock Temple, with its thousand Buddha Hall, are of particular note. The route itself consists of over 6000 steps. Daunting though that may sound, the eastern route is the favored way to the top because of its long tradition.

The western route begins at the Heaven and Earth Square. The route climbs to the Mid-Heaven gate, from where you can board a cable car to the top.

The Peach Blosson Ravine route also has a cable car to the top. As the name suggests, this route is known for the beauty of its peach trees, and it’s particularly popular when they’re in bloom.

Tianzhu Peak route is the most grueling; it’s recommended for serious climbers only. The route resembles a candle with a pine tree atop it. This route is famous for the huge, ancient pines that grow along it.

Over eighty percent of Taishan is covered with lush greenery. Some of the trees are 2000 years old. Aside from the abundance of venerable old pines, there’s a cypress planted by Emperor Wu Di.
