The Zhuang The Zhuang

The Zhuang live mostly in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Yunnan Province, but a small number of them are scattered in Guangdong, Hunan, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces. Their total population is 18 million, making them the largest minority group in China.

The Zhuang are known by a number of different names in different places, including Bushuang, Buchuang, Bunong and Buman. The Zhuang are descendants of the Tai peoples, a group that migrated south from central China 5000 years ago in search of more fertile soil.

The Zhuang are religiously diverse. Some practice their traditional animist religion, while others are Buddhist, Christian, Daoist or Muslim.

The Zhuang language belongs to the Tai-Kadai language family and is divided into two major dialects, north and south. It’s also closely related to the Buyei language. It’s written using an alphabet based on Latin letters.

The Zhuang are mainly engaged in agriculture, growing paddy rice and maize.
