The White Dagoba Temple, located in west Beijing Municipality (not the city proper), is one of a short list of active Buddhist temples in Beijing. The temple is smallish in comparison with some of the huge old temple complexes that dot the city – it has only the tall white pagoda from which it gets its name and four halls around it – but the temple’s size is no indication of the scope of its history.

After Kublai Khan invaded China and established the Yuan Dynasty, he sought to consolidate power and his shaky control over Tibet by commissioning a Tibetan Buddhist temple. Thus the White Pagoda Temple, designed by Nepalese architect Anigo, was built near Beijing and nearly 40 acres of surrounding land were granted to it. On its completion in 1279 the white pagoda stood 51 meters tall and was carved all over with images of Buddha.

In 1368 the temple burned to the ground, all except the white pagoda itself. In 1457 the other buildings were rebuilt, but by that time the temples lands had shrunk to a mere 3.2 acres. The four halls that surround the pagoda are filled with scriptures and historical relics, including, of course, numerous statues of Buddha himself.

Unfortunately, those who wish to climb to the top of the pagoda will be disappointed, as there are no stairs to the top. But, that should hardly discourage you from visiting this landmark attraction.
